Welcome to Kokanu!

So, you have decided to learn Kokanu! Welcome, you have come to the right place! This is the page for the official Kokanu guide! (Often referred to as just "the guide")

What does this guide cover?

The guide pretty quickly covers most of Kokanu's grammar, but it is not intended for use alone. Concepts are explained and incorporated pretty quickly with little time to let them really sink in, so without outside practice (speaking with fellow Kokanuers), a lot of concepts might bounce right off.

In general, this guide is more geared towards explaining how Kokanu's grammar and syntax works, rather than how to say things, or how to parse long Kokanu sentences.

Because of this, this guide isn't a great resource for learning how to fully speak Kokanu. You will likely finish this guide, understand some information about how Kokanu works, but not fully be able to speak it or easily understand the speech of others. There's not really any way to learn how to speak Kokanu without talking to other people and learning by trial and error.

The official place for the Kokanu community is the Discord server! While there are talks of expanding to other platforms, these fruitions will likely take a while to become a reality, so for now, join the Discord and start speaking with the Kokanu community! We don't bite!!

It's important to note that while the language is nearing the end of development, it is still in development, and any changes to it are polled on the Discord server. So seriously, join!!

Other resources

Unfortunately, at the time of writing, there don't exist better all-encompassing learning resources, so this is likely one of the most beginner-friendly non-technical explanations of Kokanu at the moment. Still, this guide might be too slow for some of y'all linguistics nerds, and in that case I'd recommend checking out the reference.

They go at a similar pace, though, and the reference tends to repeat itself quite a bit. I'd personally recommend first reading this guide, and then checking out the reference to see if you missed any concepts, but you do whatever you want. The guide has a bit of habit of underexplaning things.

Course Structure

This course is divided into the following lessons:

  1. Pronunciation and Spelling
  2. Basic Sentences
  3. Complex Sentences
  4. Derivations
  5. Tense, Aspect, Mood
  6. This, That, Questions, Clauses
  7. Grammar Particles
  8. Conditionals, Numbers and Maths
  9. Advanced Vocabulary
  10. Extra

Some sections are longer than others, the Extra section currently doesn't exist, and the Advanced Vocabulary section is a bit lacking. All will be updated with time.

When a new word appears in the course, it will be bolded. Its meaning should be obvious with the translation of the sentence, but if it is not, or if you have forgotten it, look for it in the dictionary.

If you are finished with the course, one last time, join us on Discord! You can also read some texts in Kokanu, and a section for other Kokanu translations will be added once enough are accumulated.
